Sponsored by the Central Academy of Fine Arts, “Ten Years—Teaching and Research Exhibition of the Foundation Year Programme” and “The Exhibition of Teaching Staff from the Foundation Year Programme” were successfully held from November 15th to December 4th at the Museum of the Central Academy of Fine Arts. Centering on “Problems of Foundation Art Education among Academies of Fine Arts”, the summit of presidents from academies and schools of international art, design and architecture was specially held from November 28th to 30th at CAFAM. The Seminar of Foundation Art Education among 9 nationally celebrated institutes in China was conducted from November 29th to 30th, which aroused a debate on “Foundation Art Education” in the international and domestic art circles.

The Foundation Year Programme of the Central Academy of Fine Arts was founded in 2001, which has focused on cultivating the students “comprehensive ability within fine arts by combining various techniques and concepts of both eastern and western art into its teaching process, to deepen their interest and understanding of art expression and improve their adaptability to future careers so that the student will get a comprehensive quality education in their four-year creative life”.

The last decade, from 2001 to 2011, has witnessed a rapid development in China, which also experienced a stabilizing of the foundation art education in the Central Academy of Fine Arts following uncertainty and debates. “Ten Years—Teaching and Research Exhibition of Foundation Year Programme” endeavors to explore the development of foundation art education in the Central Academy of Fine Arts in a historical context as well as the current situation at home and abroad. It includes three sections: “Historical Context”, “New Steps” and “How do I look?” With brief introduction on the history of foundation art education in the west and China, a summary of foundation art education and teaching achievements in this decade, “The Exhibition of Teaching Staff from Foundation Year Programme” showcases recent creations of 12 active-service teachers, their previous assignments of foundation art during their schooldays, their usual compositions for research and interview excerpts with them on “How do I study?”, “How do I draw?” and “How do I teach?”
